Sago Mini Friends is a beautiful little set of mini-games that inspires dexterity, puzzle-solving, and creativity. It begins with you picking a colorful character, who then searches a neighborhood of cartoon houses.

Knock on a door, and you’ll be welcomed inside for an animated, fun playdate. That may include hammering nails into a birdhouse, dress-up or even fun a tasty snack.

Everything’s bright and pleasant, and the game encourages empathy, with one friend looking glum if spoils aren’t equally shared.

2. Lego Creator Islands – Best Game for Kids
   

In all honesty, we’re sure most parents would be more comfortable seeing children playing with genuine Lego rather than virtual bricks on a tablet. But when the extreme thing isn’t a choice, this official game’s an excellent substitute.

If your kid continually uses a tablet, you’ve likely already installed some Toca Boca games. They’re a smart mix of learning and play, and Toca Kitchen 2 is no exception.

As the name recommends, Toca Kitchen 2 is all about cooking. This game will invite you to produce meals – however, your creativity allows. Invent your recipes and foist your creations on a bright cast of character.

Whether you’ve carefully made a burger, or just threw a watermelon in the microwave and packed it in the sauce.

4. Llama Spit Spit – Free Game Android/iOS
   

Llama Spit Spit is an oddball shoot them up, featuring a flying llama blasting crazy cartoon opponents with a mix of spittle and high-powered weaponry.

The commands are incredibly simple, meaning even younger players can get on board. Power-ups and collectible llamas (with their background imagery) keep things attractive over the long term.

The one snag is it’s the spit of Shooty Skies (Android/iOS), which is the more helpful (and more surreal) game – although the lack of ads and IAP means the llamas get the nod for this special list.

5. Disney Crossy Road – Gameplay
   

The original Crossy Road cleverly revised Frogger, with blocky characters hopping across countless chunky landscapes, striving to avoid a dunk in a river or getting smashed by a train. But the masterstroke was a raft of unlockable characters.

Disney Crossy Road is much similar but uses Disney characters that usually radically overhaul the game’s visuals and gameplay technicians. Over 100 figurines are there to be seen, and although IAP lurks, playing and getting coins in the in-game worlds is all you have to snag them all.

6. Frisbee Forever 2 – Video Game
   

You’d consider flinging a plastic disc about would make for a nonsense video game. Luckily, Frisbee Forever 2 is more akin to a set of rollercoasters, with you supervising you’re driving through gates, collecting stars along the way.

There’s a pinch of Nintendo in this breezy arcade game, with its colorful graphics, energetic level design, and a basic control system fit for all. And, although there are freemium underpinnings, you’re gifted with in-game currency for every second played – even if an attempt at a level ends in a flop.

7. Fruit Ninja – Play on Android Free
   

In the high-octane world of Fruit Ninja, your finger matches a virtual sword, chipping away at pieces of fruit lobbed onto the screen in two, and trying to avoid cutting into game-ending bombs.

It suits on a tablet excellently, since you can make satisfyingly extensive swipes across the screen. But, what sets it apart is the fact that it gives local multiplayer, so two children can zealously pit their fruit-slicing skills against each other.

8. Mekorama – Puzzle Game
   

With its small isometric world you can spin with your finger, and landscape-twisting mechanics, Mekorama leads to mind Monument Valley. But, this game has no Escher-like optical illusions; instead, it focuses on straightforward pathfinding as you support an ambling robot to reach its objects.

9. Super Stickman Golf 3 – Solo Game
   

For numerous children, golf won’t excite. But the Super Stickman universe doesn’t partake in normal golf. Instead, you’re thwacking balls across larger-than-life side-on courses – heavy castles; laser-strewn bases; swimming islands.

Although it’s an enjoyable solo game, which makes the most of huger screens (through you being able to view more of each course and therefore propose more precisely), it also has superb multiplayer modes. You can play turn-by-turn matches with friends, or try your hand at frenetic, madcap ‘race to the hole’ battles.

10. Spaceteam Game

Mostly, you’re proposing to reach and butt switches that shift rocks and build tunnels in cunningly designed single-screen challenges. But planning’s usually needed to collect keys, and not get squashed when walls begin moving.

Oddly, when you send the mouse on a mission, you can teleport to its location. Quite why the goat can’t teleport straight to the exit, we’ve no plan. Goats never were the gorgeous creatures.

8. Spelunky Free Online Game
   

This side-scrolling dungeon crawler as an Indiana Jones feel, and this is apparently why it became such a tremendous indie hit on handhelds – but it began on PC. These days, there are numerous ways to play early incarnations of the game for free.

Although this version is a bit rougher around the edges than advance variations, it remains compelling. You search caves, jumping around, picking up bling and beating up monsters. Each game is different – caves are randomly produced, and a single error can bring your quest to a sudden end, with you impaled on spikes or destroyed by snakes. So tread lightly and watch before you jump.

The game is fast-paced, funny, and has lots of weapons and arenas to unlock. And although it’s a shooter, we can’t think several parents will be too concerned about their child taking a cartoon bazooka to a conga of green monsters.
